Linking to Library Resources

This provides guidance on linking to electronic library resources using the Libraries' authentication system, OpenAthens.

PERMALINKS

Permalinks (also known as persistent links, permanent links, stable links, static links, or durable links) are the easiest way to link to electronic library resources in Canvas, course syllabi, reading lists, websites, blog posts, and email.  A permalink is a URL or web address that will consistently point to a specific electronic library resource, such as a full-text article, ebook, ejournal, streaming video, database, or a record within a database.

Why Permalinks?

  1. URLs and links that appear in the address bar of your browser when you search the libraries' electronic resources are often session-based or search-based and will not work when copied and used by someone else and/or at another time.
  2. Linking to licensed electronic library resources in Canvas, course syllabi, and course reading lists requires copyright compliance. Linking is recommended over posting digital copies of full text articles, books, book chapters, and images.
  3. Each time a library resource is accessed via a permalink, that use is counted.  The Libraries regularly compiles and analyzes usage information and uses it to inform decisions regarding renewal and cancellation of electronic resources.

How do I create a permalink?

Jefferson University Libraries online catalog provides permalinks for each item in the catalog - including journal articles.   Navigate to the item you'd like to link to, click the Permalink icon and then copy the link given.

Permalinks to other licensed materials can be created by using the OpenAthens Link Generator, aka the Athenizer.

  1. Go to https://go.openathens.net/generate/jefferson.edu/72207925
  2. Paste in the URL that you would like to link to into the box and press enter
  3. Copy the generated Athenized URL
  4. Paste the copied Athenized URL into your Canvas course, syllabus, or other web-accessible document.

Remember to test all the links you create -
