Open Access Publishing

PLOS (Public Library of Science)

We’re excited to announce that Thomas Jefferson University has partnered with PLOS, through the PALCI consortium, to cover open access publishing costs for the ten PLOS journals listed below.  The Libraries' partnership with PLOS means that Jefferson affiliated corresponding authors won’t pay any fees when publishing open access in these PLOS journals. Our agreement covers articles submitted to these PLOS journals in calendar years 2025 and 2026.

List of Eligible Journals

  • PLOS ONE
  • PLOS Biology
  • PLOS Complex Systems
  • PLOS Computational Biology
  • PLOS Digital Health
  • PLOS Genetics

Guide to the PLOS Author Workflow

The author workflow for the PLOS agreement is automated. Only corresponding authors from Jefferson are eligible. The key step, as detailed below, is in the submission process where you ensure that your Thomas Jefferson University affiliation is entered correctly.

In the “Manuscript Data” section go to “Authors”

  • Go to the “Current Author List” and click the pencil icon to edit.
  • In the “Institution” field, begin typing "Thomas Jefferson University"  and then select Thomas Jefferson University from the drop-down menu. This will pair your article with our institutional agreement.  Be careful not to override the choices in the drop-down menu.

At the end of your submission, you will be asked to review a quote of your expected fees by clicking the “View Publication Fee”
button.  Using information provided by you during submission, PLOS offers an estimate of publishing fees due, if the article is accepted.

If your institutional affiliation from the drop-down menu in the "Manuscript Data" section successfully matches to our Thomas Jefferson University - PLOS partnership, the quote should be $0.00.  At this point, you should click the “I agree to pay the publication fee” button to move to the final submission step.
