Citation Management Tools

Using bibliographic management or citation management software will help organize your research. With a few clicks of a mouse create bibliographies and save time formatting your manuscript.

Getting Started

Trying to take some of the repetitive work out of academic writing?  

Citation management tools can help. They’re designed to automate routine processes, so you can focus on finding sources and analyzing research. 

They will help ensure your formatting is consistent and conforms to your chosen citation style. They can insert and format in-text citations, footnotes, and works-cited lists. Citation management tools can also provide a place to save and organize your research sources. 

Different citation management tools do different things. Some can be downloaded and used as a plug-in with Word and Google Docs, and enable you to mark up and annotate PDFs. Some can be installed as a browser extension to cite results as you conduct internet searches. They also enable you to share collections of citations and work collaboratively across platforms. Many databases provide tools to add results to your citation manager.

At Jefferson we work primarily with three tools: RefWorks, Sciwheel, and EndNote.

What are My Options?

Students, staff and faculty can create free Sciwheel and RefWorks accounts, and download EndNote.
