Write-N-Cite Support Ending

In November 2023, it was announced that support for the Write-N-Cite (WnC) writing tool add-in for Microsoft Word will be ending. In December 2024, Write-N-Cite (WnC) writing tool add-in for Microsoft Word will no longer be supported. Since April 2024, access and installation of the WNC download has been deactivated in RefWorks. By April 2025, existing users will no longer be able to access WnC.

By the end of 2024 all users should upgrade to the RefWorks Citation Manger (RCM) add-in.

Upgrading from Write-N-Cite (WNC) to RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM)

  • For Jefferson users who have no pending papers written with the WNC tool, upgrade to RCM by the end of 2024.
  • If a research paper has been started with WNC, complete before the end of 2024.
  • WNC writing projects which will continue into 2025: back up a copy of the paper then upgrade to RCM by the end of 2024 via the following process. Install RCM (directions provided for staff and students), select RCM displayed on the Microsoft Word ribbon, log in with the same WNC credentials, and follow the automated process to complete the upgrade. Repeat these steps with all Word documents that were created using WNC. Lastly, uninstall WNC. Continue writing with RCM.

Notes:

  • The document should be upgraded to RefWorks WNC from Legacy RefWorks WNC before it can be migrated to RefWorks RCM.
  • Citations in tables and figures cannot be updated via the migration process.
  • Track Changes must be disabled in document before starting the WNC to RCM migration process.
  • Once a document is upgraded from WNC to RCM, it cannot be edited using WNC.
  • If the document is edited by multiple users, all must have access to RCM.
  • The WNC to RCM migration is unavailable in Word Online.
